“Intermission of the Shoe Fidelity”

The conception of this painting began amidst the pandemic, during the summer. I knew I wanted to create a painting that showed an un-nameable emotion. We’re all in our homes, waiting for a worldwide pandemic to subside, and for the moment when we finally feel comfortable enough in the outside world to put on our shoes and greet each other freely. This moment is simply the intermission till we can wear our shoes again.

There’s something about leaning back in a high-backed chair that makes one feel in charge of the room. With a cigarette in hand, the figure in this painting gazes up at the viewer. The back of the chair’s fabric is partly transparent, as if to show that the chair does not fully support the figure’s viewpoint. The concept of this painting is to show that those with the ‘god complex’ oftentimes have fears that they’re hiding from.

Artist Statement

"My body of work's purpose is to communicate the ideas and the myriad of emotions that come with feeling like one does not belong. I believe that needing to feel in harmony with one’s environment is somewhat universal. This chasm of belonging lends itself to an opportunity to create one.

I find ways to celebrate those concepts by creating a new environment, specially made for people who feel a little out of place. I currently find that painting figures and portraits which hold innately child-like emotions showcases this idea. While still pushing forward in this exploration, I have found that my current work speaks to that while allowing room for the viewer to create meaningful concepts from their individual experiences. I believe needing to feel a sense of belonging in one’s environment is universal." Anna Lyle artist

Artist Bio

Anna Lyle is a contemporary narrative artist from Birmingham, Alabama. She currently works full-time as a designer at an architecture firm located in downtown Birmingham, where she lives with her partner and cat. After receiving her Bachelor of Architecture from Mississippi State University, Anna moved back to Birmingham and pursue her career as an artist. Anna is mostly self-taught, working in oil paint as her medium. Her work has been exhibited in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, California, and New York.
