Biography
Kathleen King lives and works in Chicago and exhibits her work there as well as in New York, Seoul and Tokyo. Her work is included in many collections, national and international. Ms. King has been invited as a visiting adjunct professor to teach a watercolor and a drawing course in the 2013 International Summer Campus Program at Korea University. This will be her 7th summer teaching in this program.
Kathleen is also on the board of the Skopelos Art Foundation, in Skopelos, Greece.
Besides serving on the board, she has taught at the foundation and held workshops there.
Source references for Kathleen King’s work are taken from botanical fragments, other detritus pieces and constructed into 2D and 3D models. These models serve as the central subjects in the final mixed media paintings, drawings and mono prints. Suggestive of Baroque Art, wallpaper design motifs and comic visual art such as Japanese/Korean Manga Art, the resulting hypnotic tableaux are flora into faun fables that unfold before the viewer as each composition is contemplated. Implied subject matter may be seen as beautiful and playful or sinister and monstrous. The fantastic content emerges as the observational and improvised passages of mixed media are layered to form the subject and narrative.
